Description

In this presentation I will start with a very short account of how we started CodeRefinery and the RSE group in Tromsø.

I will then share some lessons learned from writing software and from teaching software engineering: tricks I wish I had known earlier. I will try to highlight how useful it can be to have a "calibration sample" and how to approach creating one. We will discuss challenges when scaling computational problems, and I will try to give some hopefully useful tips on how to approach debugging and the choice of data structures and algorithms with a research mindset.

At the end I will give comments on challenges that we face with the advent of agentic large language model artificial intelligence tools.
